“There is no doubt whatever about the influence of architecture and structure upon human character and action. We make our buildings and afterwards they make us. They regulate the course of our lives”
– Winston Churchill
WELCOME
This website has been designed as a resource for educators who wish to learn more about inclusive and engaging classroom environments. There is a demonstrated connection between the environment of the classroom and student wellbeing and learning, but this relationship is still underexplored (Hughes et al., 2019). I have done my best to explore this relationship, and I have compiled all I learned through my research into summaries and evidence-based recommendations.
The classroom is the most important environment for school-aged children, and it is essential that the make-up of these environments is understood so that informed decisions can be made that will create conditions to optimize inclusion and engagement (Brännström et al., 2021). This website will help educators to make informed, evidence-based decisions on how to structure their physical classroom environments to help ensure success for ALL students. There are evidence-based practices that can be incorporated into classrooms across BC that will make a significant difference for students with all sorts of different learning needs. I believe that we can make our schools a place where students feel more comfortable and welcome. Our classrooms can be spaces that inspire, rather than inhibit.
